Week in Review – Shutdown Edition – 5 October 2013

As the government shutdown enters into day five, Jefferson Hall is continuing to support regular access hours and basic library services (circulation, study room use, Haig Room access, very limited reference). These services are only available to cadets, faculty, and staff.

Behind the scenes, the library is maintaining this very basic level of service thanks to the USMA Band, which has assigned two members to be present during all hours of operation. The band members have and continue to display outstanding professionalism and a willingness to jump in and help in any way they can. I (the library director) have been excepted and am present each morning to open the facility and provide full training to the band members for that shift. I also am coordinating shift changes and closing the facility each night and providing reference/miscellaneous support for as many hours as practical in between. Reshelving of materials, AV/tech support, handling the mail are getting done little by little as time allows as we work to keep the boat afloat. We have support two Haig Room events, and will be working to support several more next week. Noresco employees are working full time as well on bringing our chillers both back fully online. DPW is continuing to support trash removal.

The cadets regularly approach us to volunteer to help or just to say thank you for keeping the library open. While USMA continues to deliver a base level of education, their experience has changed significantly as a result of the reduced operations.

We all hope for a speedy return to our regular level of service soon.

USMA Furlough Information for Staff

USMA staff on furlough can visit the USMA website at for ongoing updates regarding the situation at West Point. The Garrison Facebook page (linked from that website) also is a good source of information. Questions may also be submitted by email from that site.

The USMA Library blog also remains a good way to follow any updates as I will put out a note when information is available.

USMA Library Suspends All Operations Effective 3 October 2013

Due to the ongoing lapse in appropriations, USMA Library will suspend all operations effective 3 October 2013.

Physical access to Jefferson Hall will remain available during regular facility hours for authorized personnel only (cadets, faculty and staff). Access to the on-site collection will be available, though circulation of materials may not be available.

All services to the general public are suspended.

The USMA Library website and electronic resources should remain available.

All scheduled instruction sessions and clinics are cancelled.

All reference, off-site research appointments, interlibrary loan and ConnectNY services are suspended.

Pre-existing room reservations will be honored. Additional rooms may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please visit the Circulation Desk for more information.
